Susan Tipton, coordinator of the Northern Neck
Conservation Network, welcomed representatives of
area conservation groups, visitors, and presenters
to a meeting held at the Reedville Fishermen's
Museum on January 26.
Don McCann made introductory remarks encouraging the
organizations to become a cohesive alliance
concerned about the future of the Northern Neck. He
proposed the formation of a 1,000 Friends group,
which would speak with one voice about the need for
thought and planning for the future. Indeed, a 50
year vision of where we wish to be and how we will
get there was suggested.
He spoke about our subtle yet distinctive landscape,
which may disappear with poorly planned growth. "We
are already a heritage area. We do not need the
federal government to give us that status. We need
to identify those natural, cultural, and historic
resources of the Northern Neck which we wish to see
preserved for our children and their children."
Wink Hastings, from the National Park Service, acted
as facilitator for the session. Main speaker, Marvin
Moss, described preservation successes in Fluvanna
County. He talked about partnerships between
conservation, historical, governmental and other
community groups. He identified the catalysts to
action in his area, and suggested the following
general categories of catalysts: sudden population
surge, new industry or governmental installation,
loss of industry or governmental installation, "big
box" store arrival, changes in infrastructure, i.e.,
sewers or highways, and government programs.A new
trail system served as an early successful effort,
one which gained approval and support. Activities of
the allied organizations resulted in changed
attitudes of elected officials about preservation.
Fluvanna County now has 27,000 acres in ag/forrestal
land, which is 15% of total acres. Additional lands
are protected in various ways as well. Multiple
grants for preservation projects have been received.
Mr. Moss credits the coordination of efforts with
their achievements.
February 22, was set for an
organizational "next step" meeting. Details will be
forthcoming.
