A TURNOUT OF SUPPORT IS
NEEDED ON FEB 8 TO PREVENT A BIG SUBDIVISION AND FUTURE
DEVELOPMENTS IN AN AREA IDENTIFIED AS THE HEART OF THE
RAPPAHANNOCK RIVERS BALD EAGLE CONCENTRATION AREA AND AS A
CONSERVATION DISTRICT IN RICHMOND COUNTYS OWN COMPREHENSIVE
PLAN.
Issue: The
Richmond County Planning Commission voted on January 8 to
recommend REZONING 260 acres along the Fones Cliffs stretch
of the Rappahannock River from A-1 to R-1. If approved by
the Board of Supervisors, this would allow a density of 1
house per acre. The landowner proposes to place 50 75
houses where currently there are prime forested habitats
that support some of the highest densities of eagles in
Virginia, migratory waterfowl, cliff-dwelling barn owls, and
several species of declining migratory birds. It is also
adjacent to spawning and nursery areas of native fish.
Action Needed:
Contact the Board of Supervisors to urge them to deny the
rezoning request and to adhere to their own comprehensive
plan. Encourage them to takes additional steps to protect
the Rappahannock River corridor from development to preserve
this historic and valuable asset, preserve water and forest
quality and preserve the rural character of the Northern
Neck. This
issue is a big domino, which, if it falls, will impact
whats left of the undeveloped shoreline.
Mark your
calendars! Please come to the Board meeting on February 8,
2007 and let your voice be heard!
Location of Richmond County
hearings are usually in the main courtroom of
Richmond County Courthouse, and
usually start at 7:00 p.m. Check the
Northern Neck News for
announcements to be certain.
