Chesapeake Trail - A New Nature Trail |
||
Over the last year some of our NNAS volunteers under the direction of Tom Gregory have been busy working on our newest project called the Chesapeake Trail. It’s small compared to Hickory Hollow, but it is a beautiful area with great diversity of plant and animal life. Audrey Brainard and Earline Walker spent many hours identifying the plant species in this twelve-acre jewel. They were delighted to find such a large variety of trees and other plants on the tract. NNAS owes them many thanks for their fine work.The Chesapeake Trail is an ideal place for children and adults to learn more about nature. The loop trail is marked with 16 trail markers that denote significant places along the way. There is an over look on the edge of the Corrotoman for observing waterfowl and aquatic vegetation. Trees are marked with identification signs to help us to become familiar with the various varieties. Benches will be installed shortly, and there is a plan to set up an outdoor instruction area for our school children and their teachers. Our new Trail is located on the left side on Route 3 as you approach the Corrotoman coming from Lancaster. There is a parking area just off the right-of-way at the head of the trail. A bulletin board similar to the one at Hickory Hollow has been constructed, and it should be installed by the time you read this. Without interested NNAS members, Tom Gregory’s willingness to tackle this project, and approval from the Lancaster Count Supervisors, it would not have happened. We should all feel proud to belong to an organization that has accomplished so much with our members that have willingly given their time and efforts. Be sure to stop by and visit the Chesapeake Trail. It’s a great place to take your kids, grand kids or yourself.
