Audubon Adventures to Students

Public and private school students from several Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula counties will soon begin receiving Audubon Adventures, a quarterly newspaper and kit published by the National Audubon Society.

The Northern Neck Audubon Society underwrites the cost of subscriptions as part of its outreach efforts to area youth. This year, the theme will be “Exploring Four of Earth’s Biomes.” Editions will explore Freshwater Wetlands, Deciduous Forests, Coastal Environments, and Deserts, looking at their unique characteristics and the ecological principles they all have in common.

Ninety-seven area teachers have enrolled their classrooms in the program. NNAS Education Chairman Jim Groff stated: “We and the children of the area are fortunate to have so many talented and caring teachers sign up. They understand and want their children to understand the importance of safeguarding our environment as it relates to our quality of life.”

Each Audubon Adventures kit includes a classroom Resource Manual, complete with background information on each newspaper topic, detailed lesson plans, correlation to Virginia SOLs, tips for outdoor study, hands-on activities, research material, duplicating master, lists of relevant resources online, and a glossary. Participating teachers are also given a one year membership in the national and local Audubon societies and receive a subscription to Audubon magazine.
